The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially announced the promotion of Ravi Shankar to the position of Executive Director (ED), effective from July 1, 2026.

A career central banker with more than thirty years of institutional experience, Shankar moves into the senior leadership team after serving as the Adviser-in-Charge of the same department he is now set to lead.

Key Portfolio and Responsibilities

In his new capacity as Executive Director, Shankar will look after the Department of Statistics and Information Management (DSIM). This specialized division is responsible for critical macroeconomic data collection, economic modeling, analysis, and institutional reporting for the central bank.

Shankar’s extensive operational background makes him well-suited for this portfolio. Over his three-decade tenure at the RBI, he has worked across several diverse areas, including:

  • Corporate and banking statistics
  • Government securities markets
  • Settlement systems and debt management
  • National macroeconomic surveys

Additionally, he holds a Master’s degree in Statistics from Banaras Hindu University and a Diploma in Development Policy and Planning from the Institute of Economic Growth in Delhi. He has also contributed extensively to macroeconomic policy as a member of several high-level working committees.

Part of a Strategic Leadership Shuffle

Shankar’s elevation marks the second major Executive Director appointment at the RBI within a brief two-month window. In May 2026, the central bank promoted Gunveer Singh to Executive Director, handing him the reins of the Department of Payment and Settlement Systems.

These appointments reinforce the senior leadership tier of the RBI as the central bank navigates evolving regulatory frameworks, digital finance expansions, and financial ecosystem data management.
